Where will you be eating in 2010? What is the future of food? Who knows.. I am not about to start predicting the future here. But I can tell you a bit about what’s happening, what’s growing and fill you in on some exciting new restaurants which are changing the way we eat.
First of all, eating in – people are cooking at home more. Still cash strapped & dining at home, cooking for family & friends instead of going out, keeping things simple homely and honest. So comfort stays for another year, which is fine by me..
Don’t know how to cook? Take a course. There seem to be cookery schools opening up everywhere. My favourite is Dean Clough Cookery School in Halifax.
Going local, growing your own, eating seasonally, eating less meat, wasting less and using leftovers. All thrifty ways of saving cash & doing your bit for the environment. Chefs are also going regional for their inspiration.
Technology is having a huge impact on what & how we eat. We all now have the power to influence, share our own views & customise products to perfectly fit our needs.
Chefs and restaurants play one of the biggest parts in emerging food trends. And over the past few years sharing restaurants have been opening up everywhere. I mean small plates, more options, tapas style (but not necessarily Spanish). These restaurants are cheaper & great for groups of friends. Highlights in London are Wahaca, Polpo, Bocca Di Lupo and Yalla Yalla.
Fancy opening your own restaurant in your living room? It’s the anti restaurants restaurant. Ticks the boxes of eating in (sort of), it’s much cheaper and not to mention more fun. Most menus change daily and some even have guest chefs (of the Michelin-starred kind). Word of warning – if you find a good one near you, keep it a secret. Best place to find out about these is online.
Pop up restaurants – they come and go in a flash, usually a couple of months. Menus are more daring and venues are usually quirky. They can be opened for a fraction of the cost explaining just why they are everywhere. Latest ones have been Pierre Koffman’s place on the roof of Selfridge’s and Sketch.
What in the world will you be eating in 2010? More cupcakes, more amazing Lebanese food or perhaps less meat…?
As for what foods may be in vogue this year, I will post back next week with some more of my thoughts.
